What does this change in practice?

In practice, MDM decides who may create a record, what must be filled in for it to be valid, who approves it, and how the information reaches the ERP and the other systems. Without that, each area creates its own record and the divergence shows up in purchasing, invoicing and inventory.

What is the difference between MDM and MDG?

MDM is the whole discipline — people, process and technology. MDG (Master Data Governance) is the part that defines and enforces the rules: who approves, what is mandatory, what blocks. In practice you hear both terms for the same programme.

Do I need to replace my ERP to do MDM?

No. MDM works alongside the ERP: the record is created and approved in the governed flow and reaches the ERP already valid. Replacing an ERP is a decision of another order.

How long until we see results?

Start with the domain that hurts

Supplier, material, customer or service: closing the cycle on one domain delivers value before the whole programme finishes.

Quality is measured, not argued

Duplicates, empty mandatory fields and off-standard descriptions are countable. What is not measured does not improve.
