Golden record

A golden record is the single trusted record of an entity — a customer, a supplier, a material — built from every version of it scattered across systems. It is not the newest or the most complete copy: it is the result of rules that state, field by field, which source prevails.

In practice

What this changes in your master data

Rules per field, not per record

The address may come from the tax system and the contact from the CRM. Defining precedence field by field is what avoids choosing between two incomplete records.

It preserves provenance

A golden record does not erase the versions: it points to them. Whoever audits needs to know where each value came from.

It is a consequence of deduplication

Before consolidating you must recognise that two records are the same one. Without that step, the golden record consolidates different entities.
